Last week a coworker stopped by my office for some information. He handed me a piece of paper and asked me to jot down a few project numbers. I reached into my desk drawer and froze...
I can't remember the last time I used a pen at work. This slightly embarrassed me because...who doesn't have a pen in their entire office? I mean, really? What is wrong with me?
A similar occurrence recently rocked my world. I was supposed to print my tax return. I have a printer, but no paper for it. I bought it because it was cheaper to buy a 3-in-1 printer, scanner, fax machine than a standalone scanner, which is what I really needed (a means to reduce the amount of paper in my life).
I have a bookshelf full of books, but for the last year, I've read only e-books. Convenience. The ability to read them anywhere without carrying anything additional.
These changes have occurred largely unnoticed. It wasn't until someone asked me to write on paper that I realized I couldn't. It wasn't until I needed to print something that I realized I never do. It wasn't until I started to think about what I could do with the space currently occupied by my bookshelf that I realized I never touch the books.
Good news. My very kind coworker brought me two pens from the supply cabinet today. One black, the other blue. I am now prepared to face the world.
Incidentally, I found a stack of writable CDs this week as I was cleaning out some old things. Can't remember the last time I burned one of those!
How has "technology creep" affected your life? Personally, I love that my desk is less cluttered.
