Shedding light on localization

Another post inspired by the blank stares I get when I tell people what I study at school...

Just about everyone has encountered localization. They just don't realize it.

Does this look familiar?

In my opinion, user manuals are among the most boring applications of localization. But they are also among the most important. Sure, most of us could figure out how to operate a camera by fiddling with the buttons for long enough. But what about a surgical drill or an x-ray machine or a super-sensitive radiation detecting device? Instructions for products need to be clear and accurate for all of a company's customers, no matter where they live or what languages they speak.

I believe this will be the first of a small series of posts highlighting where localization meets everyday life for my friends and family.
