For the past few months, I've been toying with the idea of pursuing an MBA in addition to the MA in Translation and Localization Management. Here's why:
- The MATLM degree already includes a number of business courses. I've enjoyed the ones I've taken so far.
- As much as I enjoy school, I find it difficult to imagine returning later. If I'm going to do it, now is the time.
- This might sound terrible, but I honestly and truly enjoy managing things and building people. I suppose this happens in any field and every job, but I feel an MBA will open doors that might otherwise remain closed. I love "big picture" thinking.
- I feel that the foundational business principles taught in the MBA program will help me grow professionally and be more comfortable in the world of business.
My reservations about pursuing a dual degree concern time and money. It would likely mean another year of school, and that's a LOT more tuition...ugh. Nevertheless, I spent some time over winter break preparing my application, and I'm happy to report that I have been admitted to the MBA program at MIIS!
It's hard to understand what kind of affect this decision will have on my future (except, of course, the student loans!). I'm truly curious to tap the wisdom of the localization community. If you can, please respond to one of my questions or feel free to offer general advice. Your input is greatly appreciated.
Questions:
- What kind of positions are available in localization in addition to project management? Do any of them require MBA-type credentials?
- With and/or without an MBA, what kind of opportunities are there for upward movement in localization during the course of a career?
- Honestly, does this sound like a good idea? Why or why not?
