Ward talent show

In addition to soul-saving doctrine, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has developed a fascinating culture here in the heart of Utah county. I should rephrase that. The doctrine has come by revelation through prophets, but the culture of the people who believe in the doctrine has developed into something quite unique over time. One of the most interesting (on SO many levels) phenomena of this culture is: the Ward Talent Show.

I can’t think of too many settings in which men in their mid-twenties would dress up and dance to a Beyonce song. Okay, so not all of the acts were disturbing. LOTS of people actually came to display real talent. Some of the acts were astounding! For example, Lisa wrote a song about my roommate on the spot and sang it with gusto and passion while playing the guitar. One of my personal favorites was a brother and sister duo performing “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.” I should also mention that two of my roommates played a jazz duet that was quite nice.

As far as I can tell, there are two benefits that come from this activity. One: lots of people get to share what they are good at. Two: it sure is a fun time!
